As per media reports, the Indian government has urged the state governments to help them in developing 101 waterways which are going to be declared national waterways to strengthen the business activities through the sea route.
The state governments have been asked by Inland Waterways Authority of India to classify the rivers and ensure that minimum horizontal and vertical clearance is maintained for navigation.Further, the state government will be appointing consultants by tender process to conduct research and feasibility studies of the rivers.
Commenting on this development, IWAI chairman, Amitabh Verma told the media," Our biggest challenge is to have proper assistance and cooperation from the states. We would need to acquire land, demolish structures already built on river or redesign them...states will have to come along,"
The development of waterways will lead to a more fuel efficient and cost saving mode of transport which will lead to decongestion of the already overburdened road and railways.
