India No Longer the Land of the World's Largest Number of Poor People

A study published on 'Future Development' blog of Brookings said, "At the end of May 2018, our trajectories suggest that Nigeria had about 87 million people in extreme poverty, compared with India's 73 million. What is more, extreme poverty in Nigeria is growing by six people every minute, while poverty in India continues to fall."

The study also added that India could soon fall to the third position replaced by the Democratic Republic of Congo. It defines extreme poverty as living on less than $1.9 a day. It further added that not enough was being done to meet the target of ending extreme poverty by 2030, especially in Africa.

Meanwhile, the World Bank in its June edition of "Global Economic Prospects: The Turning of the Tide?" said that India's strong per capita growth rates may bring down poverty. As of 2011, one out of every five Indians was poor.
