FASTag, the electronic toll collection system, will be made mandatory for all toll paying vehicles in four months time, Road Transport and Highways Minister, Nitin Gadkari, said in the Lok Sabha on 16 July.

He also said that during the period, all toll collection centres, which account to over 500 in the country, will be converted to be able to accept FASTags.

"Within four months all our toll plazas will be converted to FASTags and not one person will halt at toll plazas. We have issued 58 lakh FASTags so far," Gadkari said in response to the issue of vehicles without such tags entering a dedicated 'tag-only' lane address at the Parliament.

"Within four months every person (with a vehicle) will have to purchase the FASTags sticker and this will be made mandatory. It is already present on new cars and those who do not have the sticker will not be able to get past the toll plaza," he further said.

The nearly 450 FASTags toll plazas in India which use Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to make toll payments directly from the prepaid or savings account linked to it. These toll plazas are controlled by a mix of National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and private concessionaires.

While the major highways that have dense traffic have these FASTags collection systems, vehicles get stuck in queues as commuters without the FASTags also enter these lanes, causing delays.
