FASTag Mandatory For 4-Wheelers Sold Before Dec 17 & Buying Third Party Cover
The centre in case of four-wheelers or M and N category of vehicles that were sold before December 2017 has made FASTags mandatory with effect from January 2021.
Also via an amendment in Form 51 (certificate of insurance), FASTag shall also be essential for getting third party insurance cover that will capture the details of the FASTag ID. And this requirement shall be reinforced from April 1, 2021.
The move is aimed at boosting digital or IT based payment of toll on national highways via FASTags. Also another mandate that needs to be noted is that the fitness certificate can be renewed only upon deployment of FASTag in the vehicle.
Since the year 2017, in accordance with the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, FASTag has already been mandated for registration of new four-wheeler. And it is being provided by either the dealer or vehicle manufacturer.
