This year Akshaya Tritiya falls on 26 April and leading jewellery retailers have announced online sales to enable the purchase of gold amid the nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of COVID-19.
On Sunday, Kalyan Jewellers announced the sale of gold ownership certificates through its online platform for the auspicious occasion. The company told PTI that customers can purchase the precious metal from two grams upwards following which a gold ownership certificate would be sent to them on the day of Akshaya Tritiya based on the customer recommended platforms.
The Gold Ownership Certificate would indicate the person owns the yellow metal with a certain amount of value fulfilling the tradition of purchasing gold on Akshaya Tritiya day, they said.
"This is the first time in decades we are in a state of lockdown during the Akshaya Tritiya period. This time around, owing to the lock-down, our social media channels are flooded with queries on purchase of gold," Kalyan Jewellers, CMD, T S Kalyanaraman said.
"While we know that this temporary solution of Gold Ownership Certificate is no match for the real gold, we are happy that we will be able to keep the tradition going," he said.
Customers can purchase the gold ownership certificate through its website from 21 April.
Similarly, Tanishq, Tata group's jewellery brand, also announced its plans of taking Akshaya Tritiya sales online this year as outlets are shut due to the lockdown. The offer is on from April 18 to April 27 on its e- commerce platform: www.tanishq.co.in.
Once the situation returns to normalcy and services resume, the customers can either opt to go to the store and pick up their jewellery or get it delivered to their doorstep, Tanishq said in a statement.
