PhonePe Starts Charging Transaction Fees on Mobile Recharge


The leading payments entity in an unprecedented move has all of a sudden begun to charge its customers on recharging mobile. For the same service, other players in the industry such as Paytm are not charging any amount.


So, will the customers be accepting an extra cost is the question now. While the nominal extra cost being charged is still left unnoticed by many of its users.

Notably for the Jio Prepaid recharge worth Rs. 199, for the recharge via Walmart run enterprise, customers will have to shell out Rs. 2 as charges. As per the company clarification, no amount is being charged for recharge or top up less than Rs. 50 and for recharges between Rs. 50-100 it is charging Rs. 1 and that for more than Rs. 100, the charges are Rs. 2.

"On recharges, we are running a very small-scale experiment where a few users are paying for mobile recharges. Recharges below ₹50 are not charged, recharges between ₹50 and ₹100 are charged Re 1, and above ₹100 are charged ₹2. Essentially, as a part of the experiment, a majority of users are either not paying anything or paying Re 1," PhonePe said.


Also,similar to other players, Phonepe charges processing fee for payments via credit cards. Nonetheless other transactions and money transfers continue to be free of charge.
