From 1 December 2019, toll plazas on the national highway will be equipped to electronically debit amounts from bank accounts linked to FASTags affixed on the vehicle's windscreen. These tags use RFID (radio frequency identification) to make payments to the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) or toll owner.

Earlier, there were special lanes reserved for those with FASTags and non-FASTags users going through them were charged double if they passed through these lanes.

Staring 1 December, all lanes at toll plazas will be equipped to receive this electronic mode of payment. Currently, over 80 percent of the country's national highways have electronic toll collection facilities on all lanes at toll plazas and the government is working on making it 100 percent by 1 December.

The report also said that a hybrid lane will be facilitated at all toll plazas to monitor over-sized vehicles. These will accept FASTags as well as other modes of payments but will eventually be phased out of the system.
