Wait 15 Days For Next LPG Cylinder Booking; No Shortage, Says IOC

After receiving panic orders from consumers amid the nationwide lockdown to fight the spread of COVID-19, the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), that retails domestic LPG cylinders under the Indane brand, announced it has introduced a system wherein customers will have to wait 15 days from their last LPG cylinder booking for a refill.

In a video posted on its Twitter handle on 29 March, IOC Chairman Sanjiv Singh said that the state-owned company will assure that there is no shortage in supply of fuel including LPG in the country.

"I want to assure all our customers that the supply of petroleum products, especially petrol, diesel and LPG, is absolutely normal," he said.

"Indian Oil employees, along with its general partners, dealers, distributors, delivery boys, pump attendants, transporters, are working round-the-clock to ensure that the supply of petroleum product is maintained," he said adding that there is enough LPG stock in the country and there is "absolutely no need to panic and kindly refrain from panic booking."

"We have introduced a system of allowing booking refill only at a gap of 15 days from the last refill. Kindly abide by that," Singh said in the video.

According to a New Indian Express report citing P Jayadevan, state head of IOC and state-level coordinator in Tamil Nadu & Puducherry, this 15-day rule will also apply on beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY).

In its financial stimulus package to fight COVID-19, the government had recently announced free gas cylinders for three months (April to June) to those covered under the scheme.

Meanwhile, LPG prices were cut for the second straight month on 1 April by an average of Rs 63 per 14.2 kg cylinder.

In other announcements, IndianOil said that it will provide an ex-gratia amount of Rs 5 lakhs in case of death of any personnel of Indane distributorships arising out of infection and impact of COVID-19 as a one-time special measure, to include show-room staff, godown keepers, mechanics and delivery boys.
