In a social media message, the Chief Minister clarified that the Rs. 5,000 payment includes an advance of Rs. 3,000 for February, March, and April covering the regular Rs. 1,000 monthly assistance along with an additional Rs. 2,000 summer special allocation to help families manage seasonal expenses.

According to the government, the amount has already been credited via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to 1.31 crore eligible women across the state.

What Is the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai Scheme?

The Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai was launched in 2023 for women's welfare and income-support to improve financial security. The programme provides monthly cash assistance to eligible women aged 21 years and above, including married women, widows, divorced, and destitute beneficiaries.

Political Significance Before Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections

The timing of the Rs. 5,000 payout is politically very important as it is coming shortly before the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections which will be held from April to May this year. Chief Minister Stalin has also promised that, if re-elected under the "Dravidian Model 2.0", the government will double the monthly grant to Rs. 2,000.

Opposition parties, including the BJP and Vijay's TVK, have criticised the move calling the election a freebie. Meanwhile, Congress leaders and several social groups have welcomed the announcement, calling it a step toward women's empowerment.

The Chief Minister has urged beneficiaries to use the funds responsibly for essential family requirements. The Scheme was expanded from earlier 70 lakh women to 1.3 crore beneficiaries especially in rural and urban Tamil Nadu. This welfare scheme is expected to boost household consumption, support children's education, cover medical needs, and ease daily expenses.
