ChatGPT services were restored after experiencing a widespread outage on Tuesday that disrupted access for thousands of users in the United States and other regions, according to outage-tracking platform Downdetector. The issue led to a surge in complaints as users reported difficulties logging in, stalled responses, and error messages while using the AI chatbot.

Data from Downdetector showed that more than 12,000 users had reported problems with ChatGPT by around 3:25 pm ET. The volume of reports spiked sharply within a short period, indicating a sudden and broad service disruption rather than isolated technical glitches. While the highest concentration of complaints came from the US, users in several other regions also flagged issues, pointing to a global impact.

Users affected by the outage said they were either unable to access their accounts or experienced slow and unreliable responses once logged in. Businesses and individual users who rely on ChatGPT for work-related tasks, customer support, writing, and coding expressed frustration as the disruption created uncertainty around ongoing operations.

OpenAI Responses on ChatGPT Disruption

OpenAI later confirmed the disruption and provided a timeline for the incident. In a statement, the company said ChatGPT experienced degraded performance between 12:56 am PDT and 2:49 am PDT. "This incident is now resolved," OpenAI said, adding that services had returned to normal following the affected window.

During the outage period, Downdetector graphs showed a sustained peak in reports before complaints began to decline steadily, suggesting that access was restored gradually. OpenAI acknowledged the issue while it was ongoing and said its engineering teams were actively working to identify and resolve the problem. Service appeared to return in phases across regions rather than through a single, immediate restoration.

However, OpenAI has not yet disclosed the technical cause behind the outage.
