Solar Eclipse 2026: February ‘Ring of Fire’ Surya Grahan Date, Time, Visibility and Will It Be Seen in India?

The first solar eclipse of 2026 will take place in February. It will be an annular solar eclipse, popularly known as the "Ring of Fire," and is considered one of the most visually striking celestial events.

Solar Eclipse 2026: Ring of Fire To Occur in February

During this rare astronomical phenomenon, the Moon will pass directly in front of the Sun but will not completely cover it, leaving behind a brilliant ring of sunlight glowing around the dark lunar disc.

What is Annual Solar Eclipse?

An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon is near its farthest point from Earth, known as apogee. At that distance, the Moon appears slightly smaller than the Sun in the sky. As a result, instead of total darkness, a thin, bright outer ring of sunlight remains visible - creating the dramatic "Ring of Fire" effect.

This distinguishes it from a total solar eclipse, where the Moon completely covers the Sun, briefly turning day into night. In a partial solar eclipse, only a portion of the Sun is covered, making it appear as though a bite has been taken out of it.

Observers positioned along the central path of annularity will experience the "Ring of Fire" for approximately 2 minutes and 20 seconds, making it a brief but spectacular event.

The path of visibility favours parts of the Southern Hemisphere. Regions such as Southern Argentina, Chile, parts of South Africa and nearby oceanic areas are expected to witness partial phases of the eclipse.

The path of annularity where the complete ring effect will be visible is projected to cross East Antarctica. These regions will offer the best vantage points for observing the full annular phase.

However, viewers in India will not be able to witness this eclipse. The alignment will occur when the Sun is below the horizon in India, making the event invisible from all parts of the country. As a result, Indian skywatchers will have to wait for another solar eclipse that falls within favourable viewing conditions.

Although the February 17, 2026 annular solar eclipse will not be visible in India, it remains an important astronomical event globally.
