New PAN Card Rules From April 1, 2026: How To Apply For New PAN Card Via Protean, E-Filing Portal?

With the new financial year 2026-27, a host of changes and rules have been implemented that are expected to make the lives of Indians easy and flexible. One of the many changes affects Permanent Account (PAN) holders, which has come into effect from April 1, 2026. New PAN forms have been introduced along with the requirement of additional documents for fresh applications instead of just the Aadhaar card.

New PAN Card Rules From April 1, 2026:

What has changed? Earlier, applicants could only apply for PAN using Aadhaar card. This rule was in effect till March 31, 2026. But from April 1, 2026, onward, fresh applications for a PAN card will require additional documents such as voter ID, passports, and birth certificate among others.

Also, the name on the PAN card must align as per the name mentioned on your Aadhaar card from April 1st. These details should be accurate and updated.

New PAN Card Application Forms:

The PAN card application forms have been redesignated. For instance, earlier, Indian individuals and companies filled FORM 49A when applying for PAN. Now, this has changed to FORM 93.

For non-residents and other entities, the new PAN form is FORM 95 instead of the previous FORM 49AA.

Documents Needed For New PAN Card Application After April 1, 2026:

- Birth Certificate

- Voter ID

- Passport

- Driving License

- Matriculation certificate

- An affidavit issued by a magistrate

- Other Government-issued documents

What To Keep In Mind Before Applying For PAN?

- Whether your date of birth is supported by an accepted record

- Whether your address proof is current and usable

- Whether your mobile number is linked to Aadhaar, if you are planning to use the Instant e-PAN route

How To Apply For New PAN Card After April 1, 2026?

According to the Income Tax government website, online applications for new PAN card is available. These can be made on portals like Protean (formerly known as NSDL eGov) and income tax e-filing portal.

New PAN Card Application On Protean Website:

Step 1: After clicking on the link above, you will be directed to the 'Online PAN Application' page.

Step 2: Select the 'New Application' option.

Step 3: Under the 'PAN Application Type' box, select Form No 93 or 94 if you are an Indian citizen. For NRIs, select FORM 95 and 96.

Step 4: Then select the application category which includes options like 'Individual', Association of Persons, Body of Individuals, Trust, Limited Liability Partnership, FIRM, Government, Hindu Undivided Family, Artificial Juridical Person or Local Authority.

Step 5: After doing so, fill important details under the Application Information section. Details such as first name, middle name, last name/surname, date of birth, email ID and mobile number is mandatory to be filled.

Step 6: Click on the small tick box before submitting the data.

New PAN Card Application Through Income Tax E-Filing Portal:

Step 1: After visiting the e-filing link, you will be directed to PAN card service portal. Scroll down and select on PAN card for Individual/Indian Entity Option.

Step 2: You will be directed to another page, where you have to select 'APPLY FOR New PAN Card (Form No 93 and Form No. 94) box.

Step 3: Fill the form as per your requirement and SUBMIT.

New PAN Card Application Charges:

After filling out the forms, you will be required to pay PAN application charges which is at Rs 91 excluding GST for Indian communication addresses and Rs 862 excluding GST for foreign communication addresses. The payment can be done using credit/debit card, demand draft or net banking.

Once the application and payment are accepted, the applicant will be required to send supporting documents through courier, post to Protean or UTITSL.

Notably, the applicants can also do e-verification using Aadhaar-based OTP. Only after the receipt of the documents/OTP verification, PAN application would be processed on the portals.

Apply For E-PAN:

However, you can also apply for instant e-PAN service, which is paperless and free of cost through online method. However, E-PAN services are available only to those applicants who have their Aadhaar number from UIDAI and have registered their mobile number with Aadhaar. E-PAN is also a valid form of PAN.
