As per a recent govt. notification if a taxpayer has not filed ITR despite carrying out high value transactions in the FY 2017-18, then the individual is required to file their return with the department latest in 21 days or respond. And in case the response from the individual is found to be satisfactory then the case shall be closed else necessary action will be taken by the department.

The data analytics technology has been made use of to identify such individuals and here's what you need to do if you also have received a notice from the Department of Income tax for not filing ITR in relation to the high-value transactions you have undertaken.

And to further ease the matter for such individuals, the department has come out with online procedure for the same wherein the verification and response facility is provided. After the individual assesses his liability for the financial year 2017-18, he or she can file their returns or submit the response as the case may be within 21 days of receiving the notice:

For submitting the response with the department, you need to follow the following 3 steps:

1. Login to compliance portal: After logging to your individual e-filing account, you need to go to the compliance portal link which is available under the My Account tab to reach out to the 'Compliance portal'.

2. Check with the information: On the compliance portal, you can check the information details, by navigating the e-verification section.

3. Submit response or upload return: After paying the ascertained taxes, submit the return and in case it is already filed, then submit details under 'Filing of income tax return' on Compliance Portal. If you judge that income tax return filing is not required then you need to submit the response accordingly.


So, whithout visiting the income tax office, you can respond to the tax notice and in case of any further query can call up the toll free number as provided 1800 103 4215 during business hours (9:30 AM to 6:00 PM) on working days..
