Using Rent Agreement To Update Your Address In Aadhaar - Note These Points

Aadhaar is a unique 12-digit biometric identity issued by the UIDAI and for it to serve as a valid address proof you need to keep it updated with all such details as your current address. And the facility of updating the address proof is available through both offline and online platforms. For it, aadhaar card holder can provide any of the valid address proof documents from the list of 44 documents that are acceptable to the aadhaar-issuing body. Some such documents include bank statement or passbook, driving license, telephone bill, electricity bill, water bill, voter ID card.

And if you are updating the address on your Aadhaar Id using rent agreement you can do it so online / offline by approaching the UIDAI designated centres or Aadhaar self service update portal online. But for it to suffice as a valid address proof for you, following conditions need to be met.

1. Rent agreement has to be in your name and not in the name of your parents, spouse or children.

2. Second, the rent agreement should be registered. Non-registration of the agreement with the concerned authority leads to its cancellation. Also, the rent agreement made on a simply Rs. 10 or Rs. 100 bearing a notary's sign is not a valid rent agreement. For a rent agreement to be valid, either the tenant or landlord or both have to pay stamp value equal to 10% of the annnual rent and get it registered with the registrar.

3. All pages of the rent agreement need to be scanned and later be changed to a single PDF file before uploading. And if you upload several scanned jpg or jpeg images, your application for change or updation of address in aadhaar may be rejected.

Also, when you are getting the updation done offline by visiting the Aadhaar Sewa Kendra then you need to carry the original rent agreement copy. Also, no photocopies shall be entertained as only the original document will be scanned and returned back then and there.
