Ciputra, born Tjiputra, was born on August 24, 1931, in Parigi, Central Sulawesi, Dutch East Indies. He was the third child of Chinese Indonesian merchants Tjie Sim Poe and Lie Eng Nio. His father was falsely accused of being a Dutch spy and arrested by the Japanese in 1943 and presumed dead. Ciputra grew up in poverty but resumed his education after World War II. He graduated from Bandung Institute of Technology in 1960 with a degree in architecture. At the age of 25, he adopted the mononym Ciputra (Tjiputra).

Ciputra married Dian Sumeler at the age of 24. They had four children: Rina, Junita, Cakra, and Candra. All of his children serve on the boards of Ciputra Group and Ciputra Development. His son, Candra Ciputra, serves as the President of Ciputra Development.

While studying architecture, Ciputra started a consulting firm with friends Budi Brasali and Ismail Sofyan. He later became the CEO of Pembangunan Jaya (Jaya Group), a developer partly owned by the Jakarta provincial government. He worked for Jaya Group for 35 years and became a minority shareholder. Major projects at Jaya included Ancol Dreamland and Senen Market.
Ciputra co-founded Metropolitan Group with Brasali and Sofyan and served as its President Commissioner. He developed Pondok Indah in Jakarta and invested abroad.
