Goods and Service Tax or GST is the one tax to subsume all taxes. GST is working on the principle of "One nation one tax" regime. Businesses with turnover up to Rs 20 lakh are exempt from GST. All taxable persons with turnover over Rs.20 lakhs have to get registered for the GST. The taxable persons may cancel their own registration or have their registration cancelled by the authorities due to violations.
Businesses which have migrated to the GST regime but wish to cancel their registration can do it now.
Who can cancel GST registration?
Not all people can cancel the GST registration on others behalf. The following persons can cancel a GST registration:
- The registered person himself
- A GST officer
- The legal heir of the registered person
He can request cancellation through an application, in case of death of the person. The voluntary registrations can only be cancelled after one year or more from the date of GST registration.
How to Cancel GST Registration?

GST REG 16
GST REG 16 form is to be used to apply for cancellation. No application for the cancellation of registration shall be considered in case of a taxable person, who has registered voluntarily, before the expiry of a period of one year from the effective date of registration. GST REG 17
A proper officer can send the show cause/cancellation notice to a registered person using this form. Where the proper officer has reasons to believe that the registration of a person is liable to be cancelled under section 29, he shall issue a notice to such person in Form GST REG-17, requiring him to show cause, within a period of seven working days from the date of the service of such notice, as to why his registration shall not be cancelled.
GST REG 18
The reply to the show cause notice issued under sub-rule (1) shall be furnished in FORM REG-18 within the period specified in the said sub-rule. The concerned person must reply back in this form within 7 days of notice explaining why his/her registration should not be cancelled.
GST REG 19
This form will be used by the proper officer to issue a formal order for cancellation of registration. The order is to be sent within 30 days from the application date or from the date of response in GST REG 18 form.
GST REG 20
If the proper GST officer is found to be satisfactory, the proper officer he or she shall drop the proceedings and pass an order in FORM GST REG -20.
