And this is necessary to continue receiving seamless services from the Department of Income Tax. For some of the categories of people, however the linking of PAN and Aadhaar is not mandatory and these include:

1. Individuals who are residing in the state of Assam, Jammu & Kashmir and Meghalaya.

2. Individuals who are non-resident.

3. Individuals who are eighty-years-old or above.

4. Individuals who are not a citizen of India.

For others there have been conceived different methods to link aadhaar and PAN. And here is given the method to link the two using SMS facility.

In order to link Aadhaar with PAN using SMS, one has to type UIDPAN, for example, UIDPAN 111122223333 AAAPA9999Q and send it to 567678.

Notably, the minor mismatch is still accommodated for the department for the linking and OTP is sent over the mobile number registered with the UIDAI. And in case of higher degree of mismatch in name and other details, the linking fails.

And in such a case, necessary changes are to be effected either in the PAN card or aadhaar or visit personally to a designated PAN application centre of NSDL e-Gov or UTIITSL for biometric Aadhaar authentication.

Also, as an important alert, if you do not link the two important IDs latest by March 31, 2019, your PAN will be rendered invalid. Also for receiving tax refunds in your bank account, you need to link your PAN with the respective bank account number.
