There can be a case, where your bank account details with the income tax department may not be in sync with the actual details, like there can be an instance where your bank account may be transferred to a new branch which is transferred to a place near you, on your request. In such a case, even when the bank account remains the same, the IFSC details get changed.
And so if you have filed your ITR for the assessment year 2019-20 (financial year- 2018-19) with the previous details of your bank account, then the income tax department on processing your ITR after due verification may not credit the tax refund due to your bank account because of the mismatch.
Here's what you should do receive your income tax refund
Here in to the income tax payee, you have two options:
1. If your ITR is still not processed by the department, you can file a revised return with the updated bank account details
2. Else you may ask the department to send the cheque in lieu of the bank account refund due to you.
So, in a case when you have realized the mistake after filing your ITR, you can log-into your e-filing account and check whether or not your ITR has been processed by the income tax department.
Further, in case when you do not wish to file the revised ITR, you will have to wait for the refund credit to fail in the mentioned bank account, after which only you can request the department to issue refund via a cheque.
