It is required in order to receive benefits from various state-sponsored programmes. Many public and private authorities, including those that provide KYC services, require an Aadhaar card in order to do so. Everything, from a PAN card to a bank account, must be linked to an Aadhaar card. Aadhaar cards are also required for beneficiaries of many government-sponsored schemes. This is one of the reasons why the Aadhaar card is also important for Non-Resident Indians (NRI). Here is how you can apply for an aadhaar card for NRIs.

For NRI applicants, a valid Indian passport is required as proof of identity. However, if the address in your passport has not been updated and you want to provide your current address for your Aadhaar application, you can provide any supporting documents acceptable to UIDAI as proof of address.

Step 1: Go to an Aadhar Seva Kendra in your area.

Step 2: Bring your valid Indian passport with you.
Step 3: Fill out the enrollment form with all of the necessary information. Check that the information you enter on the enrollment form matches the information on your passport.
Step 4: In the form, the applicant must include their email address.
Step 5: Later, request that the operator enrol you as an NRI.
Step 6: When applying for an Aadhar card, the NRI applicant must also sign a declaration. The declaration for NRIs is slightly different, so read it carefully and fill it out.
Step 7: Assist the operator in filling out all of your NRI information.
Step 8: The operator will scan your passport and enter it as proof of identity in the application.
Step 9: Complete the biometric capture process.
Step 10: Review the application form's completed details.
Step 11: The filling process is complete, and you will receive an acknowledgement slip with the applicant's 14-digit enrollment ID, as well as the Date and Time stamp.

Below 5 years of age:

  • One of the parents/guardians must authenticate on behalf of the child and provide consent for the minor's enrollment by signing the enrollment form.
  • A valid Indian passport is required as proof of identity in case of NRI
  • If the child is an Indian resident (not an NRI), any valid Proof of Relationship document such as a Birth Certificate, along with the parent's or guardian's Aadhaar, can be used for enrollment.

Between 5 to 18 years of age:

  • One of the parents/guardians must sign the enrolment form to give consent for the minor's enrollment.
  • If the minor is an NRI, a valid Indian passport is required as proof of identity.
  • If the minor is a resident of India (not NRI) - No document in the minor's name: Any valid Proof of Relationship document, such as a birth certificate can be used for enrolment under Head of Family.
  • Minor has a document: For enrollment, use a valid Proof of Identity (PoI) and Proof of Address (PoA) document (such as a School ID card) in the child's name.
