Aadhaar is a 12-digit individual identification number which serves as proof of identity and proof of address for Indian residents. It is widely used an identification card and can also be used for financial transactions via Aadhaar Enabled Payment Systems also known as AePS.

AePS was developed by National Payment Corporation of India or NPCI to tackle several types of services requests by enabling an authentication for Aadhaar linked account holders. AePS permits an individual to transfer money using just the Aadhaar number thus making it convenient and safe for him/her to transfer money between bank accounts.
What is AePS? It is a bank led model that permits online interoperable financial transactions at Point of Sale / Micro ATM via Business Correspondent (BC)/Bank Mitra of any bank simply using the Aadhaar authentication.
Who Can Use The Service? Individuals who have an Aadhaar number linked to the bank account, known as Aadhaar Enabled Bank Account (AEBA) can avail the AePS service. It is worth mentioning that customers must have a legal Aadhaar number through which they will be able to set up an AEBA with the authorized bank and avail the AePS services.
How to use AePS?
- Visit the respective Banking Correspondent of your area
- Fill 12 digit Aadhaar number in OPS machine
- Choose services that you want to avail (withdraw, deposit, balance enquiry, etc)
- Fill name of your respective bank and amount you need to withdraw
- Verify biometric transaction and withdraw the funds

AePS permits individuals to enjoy doorstep banking and perform necessary bank transaction without visiting bank branches. AePS is a safe method and does not require sharing the personal bank details.
According to the website of npci.org.in the objective of AePS is to "To empower a bank customer to use Aadhaar as his/her identity to access his/ her respective Aadhaar enabled bank account and perform basic banking transactions like cash deposit, cash withdrawal, Intrabank or interbank fund transfer, balance enquiry and obtain a mini statement through a Business Correspondent."
