Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah on February 5, 2026, launched the Bharat Taxi app in New Delhi, marking the entry of a government-backed, driver-owned ride-hailing platform into India's fast-growing mobility market. Designed as a cooperative alternative to private aggregators such as Ola, Uber and Rapido, Bharat Taxi promises zero commission, no surge pricing and stable fares.

The launch signals a significant push by the government to promote cooperative-based digital platforms and reduce dependence on commission-heavy, privately owned mobility services.

What Is Bharat Taxi?
Bharat Taxi is registered under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002, and was formally established on June 6, 2025. The platform was piloted by the government over the past two months before its official rollout.
Backed by eight major cooperative organisations, including IFFCO, Amul and NABARD, Bharat Taxi began pilot operations on December 2, 2025, in Delhi-NCR and Gujarat. The app positions itself as the world's largest driver-owned mobility platform built on a cooperative structure.
Operating on the principle of "Sarathi Hi Malik" (the driver is the owner), Bharat Taxi treats drivers not as gig workers but as stakeholders in the platform. Registered drivers become members of the cooperative and can eventually receive share certificates, formally recognising them as co-owners.

Bharat Taxi allows users to book city rides, intercity travel and metro-linked trips. Ride options include AC and non-AC cars, auto-rickshaws and bikes, giving passengers flexibility similar to existing platforms.
The app highlights safety as a key focus area, offering verified drivers and real-time ride tracking. It also features a partnership with the Delhi Police and places special emphasis on women's safety, positioning itself as a more secure alternative to conventional ride-hailing services.
How Bharat Taxi Differs from Ola, Uber, Rapido & Others
The biggest differentiator between Bharat Taxi and private aggregators lies in its financial model. While platforms like Ola and Uber typically charge drivers a commission of 20-30 percent and apply surge pricing during peak hours, Bharat Taxi starts with a 0 percent commission and no surge pricing.
Under the initial phase, drivers retain 100 percent of the fare. At a later stage, a commission of around 20 percent may be introduced, but the amount is planned to be redistributed back to drivers as incentives rather than retained as corporate profit. Regulated tariffs are expected to lower passenger fares by up to 30 percent while improving driver income stability.
In contrast, Rapido operates mainly in the bike and auto segment with lower-but still existing-commissions and demand-based pricing.
Ownership, Insurance and Driver Benefits Under Bharat Taxi
Unlike privately owned ride-hailing companies, Bharat Taxi is structured as a driver cooperative supported by leading Indian institutions. Drivers joining the platform are registered under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, allowing them to become co-owners rather than contract workers.
Each registered driver is covered by a personal accident insurance of Rs 5 lakh and a family health insurance cover of Rs 5 lakh. Drivers are also free to continue working with other ride-hailing platforms alongside Bharat Taxi.
Top-performing drivers will receive share certificates, reinforcing the cooperative ownership model and offering long-term financial participation in the platform's growth.
Integration With India's Digital Infrastructure
Bharat Taxi is integrated with key Indian digital systems such as DigiLocker, UMANG and API Setu. These integrations support identity verification, service delivery and emergency coordination with local authorities, strengthening operational transparency and safety.
