EPF Interest Not Being Updated? Here's What You Need To Know

The Employees' Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) plays a crucial role in managing the retirement savings of millions of employees in India. One important aspect of the EPF account is the interest credited to it, which helps grow the accumulated corpus over time. However, if you find that in your EPF passbook interest is not updated, it can be a cause for concern.

What is EPFO?

EPFO is a statutory organisation within the Ministry of Labour and Employment of the Government of India. EPFO is in charge of handling the provident fund, pension, and insurance plans for employees in India's organised sector.

EPF

EPFO provides its members with a variety of online services, including online registration, account balance checking, and claim settlement. It offers a powerful web interface via which employees and employers can access their accounts and take advantage of various services.

Your EPFO passbook can be accessed online via the EPFO website or mobile app. You will need your Universal Account Number (UAN) and password to do so. After you've logged in, go to the "Passbook" tab to access your passbook.

Delay in updating of interest in the member passbook

The EPFO defines updating a member's passbook with interest as an entrance process. The date on which the interest is written in the member's passbook has no actual financial bearing because the interest collected for the year on their monthly running balances is always added to the year's closing balance and becomes the opening balance for the following year.

As a result, the member suffers no financial loss if interest in their passbook is not updated on time.
Furthermore, if a member withdraws EPF dues before the interest is updated in their passbook, the due interest is computed and paid from the day it becomes due automatically by the system at the time of claim settlement.

As a result, there is no financial loss to a member in this situation as well.
