Gas Cylinder Booking New Rules: Have Both LPG & PNG? Your Indane, BP, HP Gas Connection Will Stop From July 1?

Gas Cylinder Booking New Rules: Amidst LPG price hikes and extension in lock-in period for refilling of cooking gas, the government is also emphasizing on "No Dual Connection" rule for Indian households. Oil marketing companies have started searching for and reviewing customers with dual LPG and PNG connections and sending alerts or messages to surrender LPG cylinders. Since the US-Israel-Iran war, the government has been promoting adoption and an an increase in PNG connections to reduce the reliance on LPG cylinders owing to supply shortages.

The shutdown and dual blockade of the Strait of Hormuz for the third month now are casting a severe impact on energy supply globally. Hormuz is a key chokepoint for 20% of the world's oil and gas transition. Countries like India, South Korea and Japan are the most vulnerable, as the majority of their natural gas, crude and LNG imports pass through Hormuz.

New LPG Cylinder Rules 2026

To cushion the supply crunch in LPG, the government introduced various rules. Here's what they are:

1. LPG refill lock-in period increased to 25 days for urban customers and 45 days for rural customers. Earlier, the gap for refilling LPG was 21 days.

2. OTP-mandatory LPG delivery. As per the government, without a one-time password (OTP) on your registered mobile number, you will not be able to receive LPG cylinders during delivery time. The aim is to reduce black marketing and hoarding while ensuring LPG is delivered to genuine customers.

3. The government has encouraged Indian households to book their LPG digitally rather than standing in long queues. Both the government and oil marketing companies have assured that there are no dry-outs.

4. The government has promoted alternative options to LPG. These are PNG, electric or induction cooktops, kerosene and coals, among others.

5. However, the rule 'One Household, One Gas Connection' or 'No Dual Connection' means your Indane Gas, Bharat Gas and HP Gas connections will soon be cut-off. The government has already given a timeline for this rule.

Indane Gas, HP Gas, Bharat Gas Connections To Be Cut From July 1?

As per News24, oil companies have warned that if customers continue using both LPG and PNG connections, one of the connections may automatically get suspended after June 30. From July 1, the blocked connection may stop working completely.

Why could the LPG connection be cut off by June-end? Let's understand deeper!

In March 2026, the government gave an ultimatum of three months to switch to PNG if you already have the facilities. Additionally, the government asked PNG customers to surrender their LPGs and to not apply for a new LPG connection or refill.

The new rule has asked households with PNG infrastructure to switch their cooking gas to PNG within 90 days since the date of the notice, which was on March 24, 2026. Any non-compliance could lead to suspension of LPG supply.

The main reason for switching to PNG is to reduce the burden of LPG supply, tackle black marketing and ensure prioritization for customers who rely solely on LPG connections.

Also, the rule explained that no dual cooking gas connection is allowed. If your household has both LPG and PNG systems, you must surrender your LPG connection.

Going by the notice date of March 24, 2026, the 90-day deadline ends on June 24, 2026. However, the government has not confirmed or given any deadline date as of now. This also increases the probability of extension in the switch to PNG facility.

But in the month of March, Maharashtra Food and Civil Supplies Minister Chhagan Bhujbal urged citizens to start applying for PNG connections in areas where the service is available and avoid the risk of losing their LPG connection. He said, "I want people who have not yet availed the pipeline gas, despite the availability of the service in the area, to start applying before June 30. How to provide connections is a matter concerned with the service provider. The company will ensure that."

That being said, the chances of your LPG connection stopping from July 1st are high.

Also, the National PNG Drive 2.0 has been extended till June 30, 2026, to sustain momentum in PNG expansion.
