In today's digital age, where personal data security is of importance, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) offers a tool to safeguard your Aadhaar number - the Aadhaar Lock/Unlock feature. This feature empowers citizens to take charge of how their Aadhaar number (UID) is utilized, enhancing security and privacy.

The Aadhaar Lock/Unlock feature serves as a shield against unauthorized use of your Aadhaar number. When you lock your Aadhaar, it temporarily disables authentication using the UID itself. This means that entities cannot utilize your Aadhaar number to verify your identity for various services, ensuring that your sensitive information remains protected.

Unlocking the Aadhaar is equally straightforward and can be done using the same methods mentioned below. However, it's essential to note that you'll require your latest Virtual ID (VID) for the unlocking process.

How to Lock Your Aadhaar?

There are two convenient methods to lock your Aadhaar

Using the UIDAI Website:

Visit the UIDAI website at https://uidai.gov.in/.

Navigate to the "My Aadhaar" section and click on "Aadhaar Lock & Unlock" services.

Select "UID Lock" and input your UID number, full name, and PIN code.

Choose to receive a one-time password (OTP) via SMS or utilize a Time-based One Time Password (TOTP) generated by the mAadhaar app.

Enter the received OTP or TOTP and submit the request.

Upon successful locking, a confirmation message will be sent to you.

Using the mAadhaar App:

Download and install the mAadhaar app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

Log in to your mAadhaar app using your registered mobile number and OTP.

Navigate to the "Services" section and select "Aadhaar Lock/Unlock."

Choose "Lock Aadhaar" and follow the on-screen instructions, which may include entering your Aadhaar number and OTP for verification.

Important Note:

Locking your Aadhaar is reversible. You can unlock it using the same methods mentioned above, provided you have your latest VID.
