You should be aware that your responsibilities do not end with the submission of your ITR. You should also double-check it. You need to verify your Income Tax Returns to complete the return filing process. Without verification within the stipulated time, an ITR is treated as invalid. Your file will not be deemed complete until you complete it, and your return will be incomplete until you do so. It is often assumed that after the ITR is filed, the process is over. This is an extremely crucial point to remember for new taxpayers. e-Verification is the most convenient and instant way to verify your ITR.
Here are the 6 different ways to verify your income tax return:
1. Aadhaar-based OTP
First, you need to ensure that your mobile number is linked with your Aadhaar number. The registration should be presented on the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) database, with the PAN linked with Aadhaar.
Now, visit 'My Account and tap on 'e-verify return' Choose the option, 'I would like to generate an Aadhaar OTP to e-verify my return.' An SMS will be generated on your registered mobile number with the 6-digit OTP. Enter the OTP received and mention it on the box required Then Click on Submit (OTP will be valid for only 15 minutes) Once submitted, your ITR will be verified.
2. Net-banking
The net banking facility on your bank account also helps to verify ITR. There are only selected banks that allow you to e-verify your ITR. To check the banks to verify ITR, visit incometax.gov.in. Make sure you should not be logged in to the e-filing website while logging in to your bank account. You should register your PAN card with the bank.
Log in to your bank account on the banks' website.
Now select the e-verify option under the 'Tax' tab.
Next, you will be redirected to the e-filing website of the income tax department.
Select the 'My Account' tab and click on the 'Generate EVC' option.
A 10-digit alpha-numeric code will be generated and mailed to your email and mobile number.
The code will be valid for 72 hours.
Under the 'My Account' tab, visit the 'e-verify' option.
Choose the option 'I have EVC already'.
Now enter the OTP on your registered mobile number, and select 'Submit'.
Your tax return will be e-verified successfully.
3. via bank account
The third way to validate an ITR is to use one's bank account to generate an EVC. To create EVC, you must have a bank account that has been pre-validated. Keep in mind that collecting an income tax refund requires pre-validation of your bank account.
Select 'Through Bank Account' on the e-Verify screen and click 'Continue.' The EVC will be produced and delivered to your pre-validated and EVC-enabled bank account's mobile number and email address. Click on e-Verify and enter the EVC you got on your mobile number and email address associated with your bank account.
4. Verifying ITR through Demat account
A Demat account holder can have a Demat account to verify your ITR. The procedure for validating an ITR using a Demat account is identical to the procedure for certifying an ITR using a bank account. You must pre-validate your Demat account to verify your tax return.
Visit the profile settings on your e-filing account to pre-validate your bank account. The required details need to be provided, like mobile number, email ID, and your depository name. The registered mobile number and email ID need to be provided and are present in the Demat account. You can use your Demat account to generate EVC only after your details are validated by your depository. Go to the 'Generate EVC' option, and select 'Generate EVC through Demat Account number.' Enter the EVC received by you on your registered mobile number to verify your ITR.
5. Generating EVC through your bank ATM
The option is only available to 6 selected banks (Axis Bank, IDBI Bank, Central Bank of India, Canara Bank, ICICI Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and SBI)
You can check on the official portal on the registered banks under ITR verification via bank ATM.
To generate EVC, you need to go to the bank's ATM, swipe your ATM card, and enter the 'Pin for Income Tax filing'.
Now an EVC will be directed to your registered mobile number.
You need to Log-in to your e-filing account on the official income tax website, and Select the 'e-verify returns' option.
