After the death of a family member, one very important formality that is often overlooked by family members is the cancellation of major documents like the PAN card, Aadhar card, and voter ID card. A lot of people don't realise that important documents like PAN, Aadhaar, and Voter ID cards don't automatically get cancelled or deactivated. If these IDs are left active, they can be misused for fraud, scams, or even illegal financial transactions. So, it's important to know how to properly handle these IDs after someone's death. Here's a simple guide on what to do with the PAN card, Aadhaar, and voter ID of a deceased person.
Why You Should Cancel the PAN Card of a Deceased Person?
A PAN card doesn't expire after someone dies. It remains active unless it's officially cancelled. That means someone could misuse it to Open fake bank accounts. Apply for loans. Claim false tax refunds. Commit identity theft.
Even though there's no legal rule that says you must cancel the PAN immediately, it's strongly advised for your own peace of mind and to avoid future problems. It also helps in wrapping up the person's financial matters with dignity and correctness.

How to Cancel the PAN Card of a Deceased Person
Step 1: Firstly, you'll have to collect the required documents, which include a copy of the PAN card, a death certificate (issued by a hospital or local authority), A request letter asking for PAN cancellation, your own PAN card copy, which serves as asProof that you are a legal heir (like Aadhaar, a legal heir certificate, or a will)
Step 2: Write a request letter which should include the full name and PAN of the deceased. Date of death, reason for cancellation, along with your details and your relation to the deceased
Step 3: You then have to submit the letter and documents to the Income Tax Department's local Assessing Officer (AO) either in person, or you can send it by registered post. You can find out who your AO is using the "Know Your AO" tool on the Income Tax e-filing portal.
Alternate Option: You can also use Form 49A, available on the NSDL website, and file a PAN correction application by selecting the option to cancel the PAN. Submit it at your nearest NSDL PAN service centre with all the documents.
What About the Aadhaar Card of a Deceased Person?
Unlike PAN, the Aadhaar card of a deceased person cannot be cancelled right now. The UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) has not yet connected its system with state-level death records, so there's no automatic deactivation. Also, Aadhaar isn't mandatory for registering a death, which makes it harder to track.
Although you can't cancel it, you can still protect the biometric data. The UIDAI lets you lock Aadhaar biometrics online. This stops anyone from using the deceased person's fingerprints or iris scans for identity fraud. Visit the official UIDAI website to do this.
What to Do With the Voter ID of the Deceased
You can cancel the voter ID of a deceased person by filling out Form 7 under the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960. You can cancel the voter ID card by visiting the National Voter Services Portal (NVSP). Download Form 7. Fill in the details, attach the death certificate, and submit it online or at your local election office.
Important Things to Keep in Mind
The Income Tax e-filing portal does not allow PAN cancellation online, so you must use either of the offline methods above.
Do not use the PAN of a deceased person for any financial or legal transaction-it is considered illegal and may attract penalties.
Removing a name from the voter list helps protect their identity and saves the family from future complications.
