National Savings Institute of the Ministry of Finance launched Public Provident Fund (PPF) in 1968 as an income tax saving long-term savings investment tool with maturity period of 15 years. In PPF, the investment limits a minimum of Rs 500.00 subject to a maximum of Rs 1,50,000 per annum may be deposited. The original duration is of 15 years. Thereafter, on application by the subscriber, it can be extended for 1 or more blocks of 5 years each.
The rate of interest is decided by Central Government on quarterly basis. Presently, interest rate is 7.10% per annum with effect from 01.04.2020. Loans and withdrawals are permitted depending upon the age of the account and balances as on the specified dates. Income tax benefits are also available under Sec 88 of IT Act. Nomination facility can also be availed in the name of one or more persons. The shares of nominees may also be defined by the subscriber.

The PPF account can be transferred to other branches/ other banks or Post Offices and vice versa upon request by the subscriber. The service remains free of cost.
How to check PPF Account balance?
If you want to check your PPF account balance, you need to visit your nearest bank branch. You need to link your PPF account to your current savings account and must apply for online access to it.
There are two different ways to check your PPF account balance namely offline and online. In offline method, you need to go to the nearest SBI bank branch. In online method, you just need to log into to your bank account to secure access to all key details. You can check current balance, interest you have earned, and deposits that have been made, among others.
Below is the step-by-step guide to check your PPF Account balance with SBI:
- You need to log into SBI PPF account portal with the help of your username and password under the personal banking tab.
- After logging in, you can view your savings account and your PPF account on the dashboard.
- You need to click on your PPF account to view your PPF balance. The balance amount will appear after you click on the tab 'Click Here For Balance'.
- You will get the option to view the last 10 transactions made using your PPF account.
- You may also check the details of old/closed/matured/inactive PPF accounts with the same bank by simply clicking on 'Click here to view the details of Matured/Closed Accounts'.
- You will be able to see balances of all the accounts by clicking on 'View All Balance'.
Steps to check your PPF account balance via the YONO App
- You need to download and install the app on your smartphone from the Android 'Play Store'.
- You must secure access from the bank for mobile banking facility.
- You will receive an mPIN to log into the app. The username will be the same as your net banking username.
- Now you must enter your mPIN in order to login.
- You need to set new password by entering the OTP received on registered mobile number.
- Under 'My Deposits' you can check the PPF account details and balance.
Check PPF balance via missed call or SMS: You can also check your PPF balance via missed call or SMS. You can give a missed call to 9223766666 or send the SMS 'BAL' to the same number in order to see the balance.
