In a significant move by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), vehicle owners have been given until February 29 to update their Know Your Customer (KYC) details. This comes as part of NHAI's "One Vehicle, One FASTag" initiative, aimed at curbing the prevalence of multiple FASTags for single vehicles. Despite speculation, the NHAI helpline number 1033 confirmed that the deadline remains unchanged.
An NHAI press release dated January 15, 2024, highlighted the consequences for FASTags with a valid balance but incomplete KYC, stating they would be deactivated or blacklisted by banks after January 31, 2024. Vehicle owners risk having their FASTags blacklisted for various reasons, including insufficient or negative balance and legal issues flagged by law enforcement agencies.

Understanding the Deactivation Risk
Vehicles with a blacklisted FASTag will face restrictions at toll plazas, unable to use FASTag lanes for toll payments. To reactivate a blacklisted tag, users are advised to recharge their FASTag accounts promptly. In cases where the FASTag is blacklisted due to complaints or rule violations, law enforcement agencies may request the issuer or acquirer to add the tag ID to the blacklist.
How to Verify FASTag KYC Status
For those uncertain about the status of their FASTag KYC, notifications will be sent via email, SMS, or the issuing bank’s application interface. Vehicle owners can update their KYC details online through the Indian Highway Management Company (IHML) website or the respective FASTag issuer bank’s portal.
To update KYC for FASTags issued by NHAI, users can visit fastag.ihmcl.com and follow the simple steps outlined on the site. For FASTags issued by different banks, the process involves visiting the https://www.netc.org.in/request-fornetc-fastag website, selecting the FASTag issuing bank, and completing the KYC update online.
Managing Multiple FASTags
To check the status of multiple FASTags linked to a single vehicle, the official link https://www.npci.org.in/what-we-do/netc-fastag/check-your-netcfastag-status offers an easy solution. It's important to note that all but the most recent FASTag linked to a vehicle will be deactivated, as owning multiple FASTags for one vehicle goes against NHAI policy. Despite this, the flexibility to recharge FASTags through various banks and payment methods remains available.
Transitioning to Full-KYC
Two years post FASTag activation, users who have not updated their KYC will receive reminders. The process for transitioning from non-KYC to full-KYC involves visiting the IHMCL FASTag portal, logging in, and selecting 'My Profile’ to check and update KYC details. Upon submission of the required documents, the KYC update will be processed within 7 working days.
This comprehensive approach by NHAI to streamline the FASTag system and ensure compliance through updated KYC details is set to enhance the efficiency of toll collection across the country. Vehicle owners are urged to comply with the updated regulations to avoid inconvenience at toll plazas.
