In a bid to simplify the tax procedure for those filing monthly 'NIL' GST return, the government on Monday allowed SMS based filing method. This return is filed through form GSTR-3B.
The procedure is said to ease the burden of over 22 lakh registered GST taxpayers who log into the GSTN account every month for filing their returns.

For their Nil liability, now taxpayers can file their returns via an SMS. And this facility has been activated on the GSTN portal with immediate effect.
How To File Nil Monthly GST Return Via SMS?
1. You need to send SMS in the format as below. The SMS has to be sent to 14409 from your registered mobile number.
NIL 3B GSTIN Tax period
2. Upon sending this sms, you will be sent a 6-digit code with 30 minute validity.
3. Confirming has to be done by sending another message in the format as given below:
CNF 3B SPACE Code.
Hereupon an acknowledgment from the department will be received with an ARN code.
The ARN code can be used for tracking the status of the return at www.gst.gov.in, by going to Services > Returns > Track Return.
For help, users can SMS HELP 3B to 14409.
This is a good move by the Government to ease the compliance burden for taxpayers with nil liability. India ranks a lowly 115 out of around 190 countries in ease of paying taxes, and such initiatives are definitely needed to make the compliances easy, less time consuming and in line with global best practices," said Harpreet Singh, Partner, KPMG India.
