In India, the Right to Education guarantees free and compulsory education for children aged 6 to 14. But the real challenge often begins after this stage. Many students who wish to continue their academic journey find themselves struggling financially once their school education ends. Higher education in colleges and universities, or in professional courses, often comes with significant expenses that many families cannot afford.

To bridge this gap, both the central and state governments offer a wide range of scholarships to support deserving students.
To simplify access to these opportunities, students can apply through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP). This platform serves as a centralized hub for government scholarships, bringing together more than 140 schemes under one roof. Open to students from Class 1 to PhD level, NSP provides a transparent, streamlined, and efficient way to discover and apply for scholarships.
Steps To Get A Scholarship In India
1. Visit the NSP Portal
Go to the official website: scholarships.gov.in.
2. Complete New Registration (OTR)
Click on "New Registration" and enter your personal details, Aadhaar number, mobile number, and bank account information.
After face authentication, a One-Time Registration (OTR) ID is generated, which can be used for all future scholarship applications.
3. Receive Login Credentials
Once registered, you will receive a Temporary ID and password via SMS. After final submission, this becomes your Permanent Registration ID.
4. Log In
Use your credentials to log in to the portal. You may be asked to change the default password for security purposes.
5. Fill in the Application Form
Provide academic details, contact information, and select the scholarship scheme(s) you wish to apply for.
The system automatically displays schemes you are eligible for based on your information.
6. Upload Required Documents
You will typically need to upload-
Income certificate
Caste certificate (if applicable)
Mark sheets
Aadhaar card
Bank passbook
Some region-specific schemes may require additional documents such as a Permanent Residential Certificate (PRC).
7. Review and Final Submission
Carefully review all details before submitting. Once you click "Final Submit," no further edits can be made.
8. Institute Verification
Your application is first verified by the Institute Nodal Officer (INO).
9. District / State Verification
It is then forwarded to the District Nodal Officer (DNO) or State Nodal Officer (SNO) for the next level of verification.
10. Ministry Approval
After successful verification, the concerned ministry or department reviews your application.
11. Fund Disbursal
Once approved, the scholarship amount is directly transferred to the student's bank account through DBT.
12. Track Application Status
Students can log in anytime to check their application status.
Payment updates can also be tracked using the Public Financial Management System (PFMS) with the NSP ID.
With the right awareness and timely application, scholarships can play a crucial role in helping students continue their education without financial stress.
