You might be delaying filling the Employee Provident Fund (EPF) nomination details for months due to multiple important taks, but absence of this small account detail comes with large financial consequences for salaried employees and their families. An EPF nominee details help in identifying who can claim provident fund, pension and insurance benefits if the member dies.

If you have missed filing EPFO e-nomination details for years, the process can now be completed online. But the nomination details become valid only after Aadhaar-based e-sign authentication is completed.

Why Digital Signing Step Is Important?

It is the final step which is required to fully complete the process. Many members update their details after marriage, divorce, childbirth or a death in the family. But they often skip the final step of digital signing. The process is considered as fully complete only after digital signing, even if the nominee names appear to have been saved on the portal.

Why EPF Nomination Matters For Members

For many salaried employees in India, the Employees' Provident Fund is among the biggest long-term savings pools built during employment. The account may also be linked to benefits under the Employees' Pension Scheme and Employees' Deposit Linked Insurance scheme, depending on eligibility and service history.

A valid nomination eliminated the risk of unnecessary complications at the time of filing claims. It gives EPFO a recorded instruction on who should receive the member's accumulated benefits. Without an updated nomination, dependants may have to submit additional documents to establish eligibility, which can delay settlement during an already difficult period.

Members Should Review The EPF Nomination After Major Family Changes

Reviewing EPF nomination becomes more important after major family changes like marriage, divorce, birth or adoption of a child, death of an existing nominee, or any change in dependency. A nomination made before marriage, for example, may no longer reflect the member's current family responsibilities.

How To Update EPF Nomination Online?

Log in to the EPFO Member e-Sewa portal using the UAN, password and captcha code. Once you login, navigate the home page. Check dashboard displays, account-related options, etc.

The nomination service is available under the "Manage" menu. Select the option.

-Once you select 'Manage', then proceed and select the 'E-Nomination'.

-You would be able to see the member's profile details, including name, date of birth, father's name and Aadhaar-related information. Any mismatch may lead to authentication failure or may require correction before the nomination can be completed.

-The member is then required to mention whether they have a family as defined under EPF rules. For most members, the answer will be "Yes". It allows the member to add eligible family members like spouse, children, parents, as nominee.

-Now add the nominee information. The portal may ask for the nominee's name, date of birth, gender, relationship, marital status, address and photograph.

-The applicant is required to add guardian details if the nominee is a minor.
-Members can add more than one nominees and divide the benefits between them. For instance, a member may allocate 60% to a spouse and 20% each to two children. The total allocation must add up to 100%. After entering the shares, the member should save the EPF nomination.

The E-Sign Step

The most important stage comes after saving nominee details. The member must click on the e-Sign option and complete Aadhaar authentication. The system generally asks for Aadhaar number or Virtual ID, followed by OTP verification on the Aadhaar-linked mobile number.

Once the OTP is verified successfully, the nomination is electronically signed and submitted. Without this authentication, the nomination may remain incomplete. Members should not assume that saving nominee details alone is enough for a valid EPFO e-Nomination.
