ITR 2026: What is AIS? How To Check Before Filing ITR? Step-By-Step Guide

ITR 2026: The official season for filing income tax return (ITR) has begun and taxpayers are busy compiling their documents, reaching out to chartered accountants (CAs) and navigating their income tax return details. But missing out on one crucial step could cost them big. Taxpayers must always review their Annual Information Statement (AIS) before filing for ITR.

What is AIS?

As per Income Tax portal, AIS is a comprehensive view of information for a taxpayers. AIS objectives are to display complete information to taxpayer before filing ITR. It also promotes voluntary compliance and also enable seamless prefilling of return. It can also deter non-compliance for taxpayers.

AIS Key Components

AIS is divided into two parts, first is general information, and the second is TDS/TCS Information. The first part displays regular information like PAN, masked Aadhar Number, name of the Taxpayer, date of birth/ Incorporation/ Formation, mobile number, e-mail address and address of Taxpayer.

The second part of AIS includes SFT information, payment of taxes, demand and refund, and other information.

How To View Annual Information System?

Follow the below mentioned steps, top view AIS before filing ITR.
-Visit the official website of Income Tax Departmenet, ie www.incometax.gov.in
-Login using your credentials, and proceed.
-Navigate the home page and click on the option to check Annual Information Statement (AIS) menu on dashboard.
-Now click on the Proceed button.
-You will be redirected to the AIS portal.Now click on the AIS title to view your Annual Information Statement.

Second Way to View AIS

-Log in to https://www.incometax.gov.in/.
-Select the option of e-File menu
-Click on Income Tax Return> View AIS
-Click on Proceed button, you will be redirected to AIS portal. Now click on AIS title to view AIS.

Taxpayers can also track the activity history in AIS by clicking on the Activity History button on AIS homepage. They can get a summary view of activity performed on the Compliance portal. System generated ID (Activity ID) will be created for each performed activity, and the Activity date, Activity description and detail will be displayed under this tab.
