Important update for Aadhaar and PAN card holders! From July 1, 2025, the Central Board of Direct Taxes will require mandatory Aadhaar authentication for all new PAN card applications. This move is part of a broader effort to digitalise tax procedures and strengthen verification, aiming to curb fraud and ensure that every PAN card is uniquely tied to its rightful owner.
Big Update for Aadhar Card and PAN Card Users
From July 1, 2025, the Central Board of Direct Taxes will require Aadhaar authentication for new PAN card applications. This change aligns with efforts to enhance digitalisation and ensure accountability in tax filing. Currently, individuals can apply for a PAN using their name, birth date proof, or other identification documents.

Income Tax Department Mandates Pan Card and Aadhar Card Linking: Check Last Date to Link
The Income Tax department has mandated linking existing PAN cards with Aadhaar by December 31, 2025. Failure to do so will render the PAN card non-functional from the following year. This measure aims to prevent tax evasion by individuals obtaining multiple PANs or using others' PANs.
New Requirements for PAN Card Applications
Starting July 2025, applying for a new PAN card will necessitate an Aadhaar card for verification purposes. This requirement is part of a broader initiative to streamline processes and improve compliance in tax-related matters.
The Income Tax department's decision follows instances of misuse involving multiple PANs for fraudulent GST registrations. As of March 2024, India had over 740 million PAN cardholders, with 605 million having linked their Aadhaar.
Linking Aadhaar with Existing PAN Cards
Existing PAN cardholders must link their cards with Aadhaar by the end of 2025 to avoid penalties. The linkage is crucial to maintain the functionality of the PAN cards beyond this deadline.
The introduction of mandatory Aadhaar verification reflects a significant step towards digitalising India's tax system. It aims to enhance transparency and accountability in financial transactions.
How to link Pan Card and Aadhar Card?
Linking your PAN card with your Aadhaar card is a simple and important process to ensure compliance with government regulations. You can easily link the two online by visiting the official Income Tax Department website or using the e-filing portal. To link your PAN card with your Aadhaar card, follow these simple steps.
- First, visit the official Income Tax Department's e-filing website.
- Next, look for the option that says "Link Aadhaar" on the homepage and click on it.
- Then, enter your PAN number, Aadhaar number, and your name exactly as it appears on your Aadhaar card.
- After filling in the details, click on the "Submit" button.
- You will receive a one-time password (OTP) on your registered mobile number linked to your Aadhaar.
- Enter the OTP in the required field to verify your identity.
- Once the OTP is confirmed, your PAN card and Aadhaar card will be successfully linked.
- You can check the status of the linking on the same portal anytime.
The I-T department is also launching the PAN 2.0 project to advance digitalisation within the PAN and TAN administrative framework. This project aims to provide improved taxpayer services through integrated platforms.
Under the new framework, existing PAN cards remain valid without requiring additional steps from cardholders. The current cards will continue functioning seamlessly within the updated system.
