OCI Card Guide: Foreigners with Indian roots who regularly visit India for various purposes can do so with fewer formalities by applying for an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card. The OCI card can make travelling to India easier with less paperwork and greater freedom to pursue jobs or studies.
For those who are planning to apply for an OCI card, here are all the details to know about it.

What is an OCI Card?
The Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) Scheme was introduced by amending the Citizenship Act, 1955, in August 2005. The scheme provides for registration as OCI of all Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) who were citizens of India on January 26, 1950, as per the Consulate General of India.
Those people can also apply for OCI who were eligible to become citizens of India on 26th January, 1950, except those who are or have been citizens of Pakistan, Bangladesh or such other country as the Central Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, specify.
What Are The Benefits of an OCI Card?
A registered OCI card offers multiple entry, multipurpose life-long visa for visiting India, exemption from Foreign Regional Registration Officer or Foreign Registration Officer for any length of stay in India.
However, OCI card does not give the same rights as full Indian citizenship. The status is also helpful to manage property, support relatives, or run businesses in India while living overseas. The card therefore offers a stable, long-term connection with India for foreign nationals with Indian roots.
Who is Eligible For OCI Card?
Foreign nationals who are eligible for Indian citizenship after 1950 can apply for OCI Card.
Individuals from territories that later joined India are also covered. Children of such people may qualify as well. In short, if a person or the person's parents or grandparents have Indian origin, that person usually fits the broad qualification test, subject to official checks.
OCI Card Benefits
OCI card holders have lifelong visa-free entry to India. There is no limit on how long cardholder may stay during each visit. Separate permits for work or study within India are also not required. However, an OCI cardholder cannot vote in Indian elections and cannot hold Indian government posts. The card is therefore closer to long-term residency permission.
OCI Card Application Fee
Costs for OCI card services in 2026 differ by request type. Re-issuance for updates or changes generally costs about $25, or Rs 1,400 in India. A duplicate OCI card for loss or damage can cost up to $100, or ₹5,500. After filing online, applicants may need to present original papers at an Indian Mission or FRRO before the request is cleared.
