PAN-Aadhaar linking: CBDT Issues Clarification On Downloading Challan

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has issued a clarification regarding the process of linking Permanent Account Number (PAN) with Aadhaar, addressing concerns related to downloading the acknowledgement and verifying the status of challan payment.

The deadline for linking Permanent Account Number (PAN) with Aadhaar was June 30, 2023, and unlike previous instances, there has been no extension granted by the authorities this time.

However, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has provided a solution to address the challenges faced by individuals in meeting the deadline.

The income tax department, through its official Twitter handle, issued a clarification.
It stated that for cases where the fee payment and consent for linking PAN with Aadhaar have been received but the actual linking process has not been completed by June 30, 2023, the Department will duly consider such cases and provide necessary assistance.

In a tweet, CBDT said: "Kind Attention PAN holders! Instances have come to notice where PAN holders have faced difficulty in downloading the challan after payment of fee for Aadhaar-PAN linking. In this regard, it is to be informed that the status of challan payment may be checked in 'e-pay tax' tab of the portal after login. If a payment is successful, then the PAN holder can proceed to link PAN with Aadhaar. There is no need of downloading the challan receipt for linking PAN with Aadhaar. Further, as soon as the PAN holder completes the payment successfully, an email with an attached copy of the challan is already being sent to the PAN holder. In cases where fee payment and consent for linking have been received, but linking has not been done till 30.06.2023, such cases will be duly considered by the Department."

Just hours before the deadline for linking PAN with Aadhaar expires, information on downloading challan receipts is made available.

PANs are unique numbers assigned to individuals and organisations for tax-related purposes. Every resident does receive an Aadhaar number, though. The income tax division has made linking PAN and Aadhaar cards mandatory in order to simplify financial transaction processes.
