PM Fasal Bima Yojana: The central government-sponsored crop insurance scheme for farmers is now open for registration. Farmers can register under the scheme to get their Kharif 2025 crops insured. The scheme was launched in 2016 as a part of the central government's initiative to provide insurance service to farmers to protect their yield.
What is Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana?
It is a central government's flagship scheme to provide agricultural insurance to farmers for their yields. Farmers can opt for the scheme to protect their annual commercial, horticulture corps, oilseeds, and food crops like cereals, millets, and pulses.

All the farmers who have borrowed institutional loans from banks are covered under scheme, whereas those who have not taken credit can voluntarily enroll with PM Fasal Bima Yojana, which is administered by the Ministry of Agriculture.
What Are The Benefits Of PM Fasal Bima Yojana?
Affordable premiums for Kharif crops and oilseed crops is one of the key benefits of PM Fasal Bima Yojana. The maximum premium payable by the farmers will be 2% forthe Kharif food and oilseed crops. The percentage may vary for other crops. Meanwhile, the remaining premium is subsidised by the government.
For farmers in North Eastern States, Jammu, Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, the government also pays the entire premium.
What Does The Scheme Cover?
The scheme cover damage of crops due to natural disasters like droughts, floods, pests, and disease, poor harvest losses due to local risks like hailstorms, landslides, etc. It also offers timely compensation of the insurance to affected farmers. It also covers sowing, post-harvest losses, yield losses, localised calamities, etc.
PM Fasal Bima Yojana: What Is The Eligibility?
Farmers, including those who are tenants or sharecroppers, can access insurance for specific crops in designated regions. Eligibility requires a valid interest in the crops and either land ownership or a legitimate land tenure agreement.
They must be actively farming or sharecropping on the insured land. Applications should be submitted within two weeks of sowing season start. Farmers compensated for the same crop loss from other sources cannot claim under this scheme.
To qualify for the insurance scheme, farmers must demonstrate a genuine insurable interest in their crops. This means they should either own the land or have a valid agreement that allows them to cultivate it. Active involvement in farming or sharecropping on the insured land is also necessary to meet eligibility requirements.
