PM Surya Ghar Yojana Delhi: Free Rooftop Solar Panels For 2.25 Lakh Homes, How To Register

The Chief Minister of Delhi, Rekha Gupta on Monday, September 21, announced the launch of a dedicated online portal for residents to register under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.In Delhi's version of the scheme, the state government is going to cover the entire cost of installing rooftop solar panels of up to 3 kW capacity.

So the eligible households won't have to spend a single rupee. Applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Solar panels will be installed on 2.25 lakh homes across the national capital under the initiative.

About PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is a central government scheme which was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February 2024, with a budget outlay of Rs. 75,021 crore.

Its primary goal is to provide free electricity, up to 300 units a month, to 1 crore households across India by promoting rooftop solar installations.

Subsidy Structure Under The Central Scheme

According to the official website, the central scheme provides a subsidy of Rs. 30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW of capacity, and Rs. 18,000 per kW for additional capacity up to 3 kW, capping the total subsidy at Rs. 78,000 for systems larger than 3 kW.

Based on average monthly electricity consumption, households consuming 0-150 units would typically need a 1-2 kW system so the subsidy given is Rs. 30,000-Rs. 60,000.

Those consuming 150-300 units would need 2-3 kW, Rs. 60,000- Rs.78,000, and those above 300 units would need a system larger than 3 kW, capped at the Rs. 78,000 subsidy.

Group Housing Societies and Resident Welfare Associations can get Rs. 18,000 per kW for shared facilities, including EV charging, up to 500 kW capacity.

Households in special category states, including Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jammu & Kashmir, are eligible for an additional 10% subsidy per kW.

In Delhi's case, since the state government is covering the full installation cost for systems up to 3 kW, eligible residents pay nothing, with the central subsidy and the state's additional funding together absorbing the cost.

Who Is Eligible for PM Surya Ghar Yojana Delhi

• Must be a citizen of India
• Must own the property and the rooftop where the panel will be installed
• Must have a valid electricity connection in their own name
• The property must have roof space suitable for solar panel installation
• Must not have availed any other government solar subsidy previously
• Each household is eligible for only one subsidy

How To Register For PM Surya Ghar Yojana Delhi

Step 1: Visit the official PM Surya Ghar portal or Delhi's newly launched dedicated portal and log in using a registered mobile number with OTP
Step 2: Complete the application by entering electricity and personal details, either independently or through a registered vendor
Step 3: Submit the application and wait for feasibility approval from the DISCOM
Step 4: Select a registered vendor and submit bank account details for the subsidy transfer
Step 5: After installation, the DISCOM conducts an inspection and approves the setup
Step 6: The subsidy is deposited directly into the applicant's bank account, within 30 to 45 working days of installation and verification
