The savings deposit and fixed deposits of customers do attract income tax. It is a good habit to keep a record of all TDS certificates with us while filing the income tax returns.
The savings deposit and fixed deposits of customers do attract income tax as per the Income Tax Act of 1961. Interest earned on fixed deposit of up to Rs 40,000 per annum is exempt from income tax. Anything beyond Rs 40,000 per year is subject to tax. Hence the bank will directly deduct the tax deducted at source (TDS) from the fixed deposit before handing over the maturity proceeds to the investors.
It is a good habit to keep a record of all the tax deducted at source (TDS) certificates or Form 16A and the interest certificates with us while filing the income tax returns.

The TDS certificates contain all the details of the total tax deducted by the bank on the interest paid amount or levied on the fixed deposit for every quarter. So, it is necessary to have a look at this form every quarter to easily verify the total amount of TDS deducted by the bank.
An Interest Certificate is similar to the TDS Certificate and this will be issued by the bank at the end of the financial year. It contains the details of the total interest paid on the fixed and savings accounts. The interest earned on a savings account is taxable as per the Income Tax Act.
