RBI Allows Issuance And Acceptance Of RuPay Cards

Banks will now be permitted to offer RuPay Prepaid Forex cards, according to Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das, who read out the monetary policy statement following a three-day deliberation on Monday.

This move intends to make international travel more convenient and secure by offering individuals an alternate payment option for their foreign currency needs. The RBI Governor stated that RuPay Debit and Credit cards provided by Indian banks are gaining international popularity.

RBI

"It has now been decided to permit issuance of RuPay Prepaid Forex cards by banks. This will expand the payment options for Indians travelling abroad. Further, RuPay cards will be enabled for issuance in foreign jurisdictions. These measures will expand the reach and acceptance of RuPay cards globally". Shaktikanta Das said.

The decision is in response to RuPay Debit and Credit cards produced by Indian banks acquiring international acceptance through bilateral agreements with overseas partners and co-badging agreements with international card schemes.

Banks issuing Rupay prepaid currency cards will also provide customers with greater convenience and flexibility while travelling abroad. These cards include additional security features such as chip and PIN technology, which safeguard against fraudulent transactions and secure the protection of funds.

Customers may also readily refill these cards as needed, giving them better control over their foreign currency spending.
