With the rising popularity of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), digital transactions in India have become more seamless, quick, and convenient than ever before. In a significant move, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has introduced new policies that now allow users to link their credit and debit cards to UPI-enabled apps such as Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm.

This integration aims to further enhance digital payment adoption by enabling users to make payments directly from their credit or debit cards using just a QR code-no need for a physical card swipe.
Currently, only RuPay credit and debit cards are supported for UPI linking. If you're a RuPay cardholder, here's a step-by-step guide on how to link your card with UPI.
How To Link RuPay Credit Or Debit Card To UPI?
Step 1 - Download UPI enabled app from the App Store or Play Store.
Step 2 - Open the app and navigate to "Add Bank Account" or "Add Card" section.
Step 3 - Enter credit or debit card details such as card number, CVV, and expiry date of the card.
Step 4 - After submitting card details, you will receive a one-time password (OTP) on your registered mobile number. Enter the number to verify your card.
Step 5 - After successfully linking credit or debit card to UPI, create a UPI ID, by going to the 'Profile' section and selecting 'UPI ID'. This ID should be a combination of numbers, letters and special characters.
Benefits Of Linking RuPay Credit Or Debit Card To UPI
Wider acceptance - Most merchants have UPI QR codes, but not all have PoS machines. Linking your RuPay credit card with UPI lets you pay at more outlets using just your phone.
Smooth payment - UPI payments are instant-no need to swipe or enter PINs repeatedly.
One-time process - Once you link your card, you can enjoy hassle-free payments without re-entering card details every time.
Contactless payment - No need to hand over your card or touch PoS machines-just scan and pay.
More rewards - Many banks offer cashback, rewards, or loyalty points when you use credit or debit cards-even via UPI.
Drawbacks Of Linking RuPay Credit Or Debit Card To UPI
While the feature is convenient, there are a couple of limitations:
Transaction Limits - Currently, there's a cap on the transaction amount via UPI using RuPay credit cards. If you're planning a high-value purchase, you may have to use your card directly.
QR Code Compatibility - Not all merchants accept RuPay card-based UPI payments. Look for QR codes labeled "UPI on RuPay Credit Card" to ensure compatibility.
Despite these drawbacks, this feature marks a significant step toward broadening the reach of digital payments in India. By combining the ease of UPI with the benefits of credit and debit cards, users can now enjoy a more flexible, rewarding, and secure way to make everyday payments.
