Top 5 PM Schemes For Students In India - 2024
The government's PM schemes for students are designed to provide comprehensive support in education, skill development, and financial assistance. As the country's prime minister since May 26, 2014, Narendra Damodardas Modi is an Indian politician who works tirelessly to give financially needy students from low-income families access to a variety of scholarships and courses that will brighten their future. Here's a breakdown of some key schemes as per Ms. Rajani Tandale, Senior Vice President, Mutual Fund - 1 Finance.

PM Scholarship Scheme (PMSS)
- Offers financial support to selected students for 1 to 5 years, depending on the course duration.
- Scholarship amount: Rs 2,500 per month for boys and Rs 3,000 per month for girls. The money is deposited into the chosen students' bank accounts via ECS.
- Aimed at easing the financial burden on families and promoting higher education.
- Scholarships are offered to students enrolled in a variety of technical educational institutions, including those approved by the AICTE/UGC for study in the fields of medical, dental, veterinary, engineering, MBA, MCA.
- Each academic year, a total of 5500 wards/widows of ex-servicemen (2750 boys and 2750 girls) are chosen to receive scholarships.
- The candidate must have met the Minimum Educational Qualification (MEQ) requirements, which include 10+2, diploma, and graduation, with an overall mark of at least 60%. The candidate must be a dependent ward or widow of an ex-Coast Guard personnel or service member. The candidate must be enrolled in a first-year course, with the exception of lateral entry and integrated courses.
PM Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY)
- Organised by the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) is the flagship program of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE).
- Also known as the Pradhan Mantri Youth Training Program, this scheme focuses on skill development and standardization of skills.
- Helps youth gain recognition for their skills and enhances their employability.
- Three types of training will be offered under PMKVY i.e. Short-Term Training (STT), Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Special Projects.
- Those within the age group of 15 - 45 years seeking to upskill or reskill, those without formal education, those who have dropped out of school or college, and unemployed young Indian nationals are all eligible to apply for short-term training.
- Those writhing the age cap of 15 - 45 years who are marginalised, vulnerable, etc., and who need additional assistance or job roles that emphasise developing future skills, are eligible to apply for special projects under PMKVY.
- The PMKVY recognises prior learning training for candidates within the 18- 59 years age group who have prior learning experience or abilities and are willing to be assessed and certified.
PM CARES For Children
- Launched to support children who lost both parents, legal guardians, or adoptive parents to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Hon'ble Prime Minister of India introduced the PM CARES for Children Scheme on May 29, 2021, for children who, beginning on March 11, 2020, lost both of their parents, a legal guardian, adoptive parents, or a surviving parent due to the COVID-19 epidemic.
- Ensures comprehensive care, including health insurance, education, and financial support until the child reaches 23 years of age.
- For every child, the program provides financial assistance of up to Rs 10 lakh.
- All children's rehabilitation is supported by the boarding and lodging plan under the scheme.
- By granting admission to schools, the PM Cares program helps with schooling.
- The program offers loan benefits in order to support higher education for children.
- The PM Cares programme provides Rs 5 lakhs in health insurance coverage.
- For every child enrolled in school (Class 1-12), the program offers a scholarship of Rs 20,000 per child every year.
Atal Innovation Mission (AIM)
- Promotes a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship across the country.
- Develops programs and policies to foster innovation in different sectors, providing platforms and collaboration opportunities.
- The Government of India's initiative to foster an innovative and entrepreneurial culture has been designated the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), which encompasses Self-Employment and Talent Utilisation (SETU). It is a government forum for promoting top-tier innovation hubs, grand challenges, start-up companies, and other independent ventures, especially in tech-related fields.
- AIM is offering programs which are Atal Tinkering Labs, Atal Incubation Centres, Atal New India Challenges and Atal Grand Challenges and Mentor India.
PM eVidya
- The DIKSHA portal and mobile app provide access to a vast collection of eBooks and educational resources.
- A game-changer in providing quality digital education and skill-building resources to students.
- The program makes it easier for learners and teachers to access a variety of digital and online teaching and learning resources in several modes.
- PM eVidya TV channels on One Class-One channel provides educational content for students in classes 1 to 12. Curriculum-based educational programming produced by NCERT and other organisations, such as CBSE, KVS, NIOS, Rotary, etc., is shown on these channels which have been developed in Hindi, English, and regional languages.
