Update Aadhaar Card and PAN Card Details Online through Income Tax Department Website

The Income Tax Department providing online service for Indian citizens to correct/modify errors in their name and other details mentioned on the PAN (Permanent Account Number) card and the Aadhaar card.

When filing Income Tax Returns (ITR), the income tax department accepts data from the PAN card to pre-fill certain details in ITR application forms.

Although your address is not visible on the PAN card, it is on file with the Income Tax Service issuing the document. All you can see only of your initial details like your name, father/mother's name, date of birth and the PAN card number on the card. However, when you applied for a PAN card, you provided the income tax department with all the details, including your residential address.

The main confusion that many people face is that the two documents PAN and Aadhaar are used as proof of identity, which leads people to believe that this is their main use. In fact, the two documents are completely different from each other and serve a much more important purpose in the life of an individual.

Recently, the government has also suggested linking the aadhaar card to the PAN card to avoid the flow of fake PAN cards. As the claims say, 10 PAN lakh fake PAN cards were canceled.

It's a Mandatory to link Aadhaar card and PAN card

In the latest addition, the income tax department has confirmed that taxpayers will need to associate their Aadhaar cards with PAN cards to deposit their e-ITR which is mandatory for all individuals, except those with lower incomes at Rs 2 lakh per year and those whose age is 80 and above.

About 1.2 crore assessors have already obtained their PAN linked to Aadhaar, but the number is extremely low as there are more than 42 crore PAN cardholders in the country, whereas currently, Aadhaar has been issued to 123 crore people.

Correction of PAN and Aadhaar card details

The I-T Department has launched an online function to correct errors in the names and other details mentioned in the permanent account number (PAN) and as well as the Aadhaar card.

Among all of these, there is news from the Income Tax Department making it easier to correct names and other details in their Aadhaar card and PAN card details. Holders of the Aadhaar card and the PAN card can now correct their details via a link called Update PAN/Aadhaar details.

Here are some simple steps that can help you to update your details in PAN or Aadhaar card:

Step1: The Income tax department has provided two separate hyperlinks on its official income tax return website (incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in). If you need to change your details on PAN and Aadhaar card, visit the following website and click on update PAN/Aadhaar details on the right side.

Step2: The first link is to make changes to existing PAN card details or to apply for a new PAN card by an Indian citizen or Non-residential Indian (NRI). The second hyperlink is for people who want to update their Aadhaar card information by logging into the "Aadhaar Self-Service Update Portal" using the unique identity number. After that, the person can download scanned documents as evidence for updating the data request.

Step3: After clicking on the first link, it will be automatically redirected to another website which is the NSDL website to update the details of the PAN.

Step4: After submitting, you will get an overview of your request form. Check your details in the overview form, make the necessary changes if necessary and proceed to payment.

(If the communication address is in India, the processing fee will be Rs.110. For a communication address outside India, the processing fees are Rs.1020. Payment can be made either by demand draft, by credit or debit card or by Internet Banking. The draft application, if used, must be in favour of "NSDL - PAN" and be payable at Mumbai. The name of the applicant and the acknowledgement number must be mentioned on the back of the demand draft application.)

Step5: If you think your PAN details are correct and you want to make changes to your Aadhaar, you need to click on the second link which will be redirected to the Aadhaar portal and from there you can easily make changes according to your needs. You must also upload a relevant document for the process to be authenticated and verified by UIDAI.

Step7: On the page where the user chooses to correct the details of the aadhar card, the number of the aadhaar card and a certain captcha are requested followed by verification by OTP.
Your update request is completed successfully and you will receive an acknowledgement slip.

Step8: The acknowledgement slip contains the update request number (URN). Once updated, you can download the updated version and print your Aadhar card in online through UIDAI website.

Once you have completed the changes, the Income Tax Department has provided the option to link your Aadhaar and PAN. You must mention your PAN and Aadhaar number as well as your name in accordance with UID (Unique Identification Authority of India) data. Once the verification has been carried out by the UIDAI, the link between Aadhaar and PAN will be confirmed. However, in case of minor discrepancy in the name Aadhaar, Aadhaar OTP will be sent to the mobile number which you are registered with the UIDAI. Thus, this simple process will help you update and link your Aadhaar with PAN very easily via the online process.
