The Income Tax Department providing online service for Indian citizens to correct/modify errors in their name and other details mentioned on the PAN (Permanent Account Number) card and the Aadhaar card.
When filing Income Tax Returns (ITR), the income tax department accepts data from the PAN card to pre-fill certain details in ITR application forms.
Although your address is not visible on the PAN card, it is on file with the Income Tax Service issuing the document. All you can see only of your initial details like your name, father/mother's name, date of birth and the PAN card number on the card. However, when you applied for a PAN card, you provided the income tax department with all the details, including your residential address.
The main confusion that many people face is that the two documents PAN and Aadhaar are used as proof of identity, which leads people to believe that this is their main use. In fact, the two documents are completely different from each other and serve a much more important purpose in the life of an individual.
Recently, the government has also suggested linking the aadhaar card to the PAN card to avoid the flow of fake PAN cards. As the claims say, 10 PAN lakh fake PAN cards were canceled.
It's a Mandatory to link Aadhaar card and PAN card
In the latest addition, the income tax department has confirmed that taxpayers will need to associate their Aadhaar cards with PAN cards to deposit their e-ITR which is mandatory for all individuals, except those with lower incomes at Rs 2 lakh per year and those whose age is 80 and above.
About 1.2 crore assessors have already obtained their PAN linked to Aadhaar, but the number is extremely low as there are more than 42 crore PAN cardholders in the country, whereas currently, Aadhaar has been issued to 123 crore people.
