UPI In France: How Will It Work, Charges And Other Details

India and France have agreed to a groundbreaking collaboration that will see the implementation of India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in France. The decision was announced by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to France, marking a significant milestone in the digital payment revolution.

"Be it India's UPI or other digital platforms, they have brought a huge social transformation in the country and I am happy that India and France are also working together in direction. India and France have agreed to use UPI in France. I will leave after the agreement. However, it is your job to move forward. Friends, in the coming days its beginning will be made from Eiffel Tower which means that Indian tourists will now be able to make payments in Rupees, through UPI, at Eiffel Tower," Modi said while addressing the Indian community at La Seine Musicale in Paris.

Once UPI payments are accepted in France, Indian visitors would be able to pay for things there using their rupees. From the Eiffel Tower, it will begin. In other instances, travellers from India to Europe would be able to use their UPI apps to make payments in rupees in France using local QR codes or UPI IDs.

UPI payments were made possible in Singapore in February as a result of a cross-border connectivity arrangement between Singapore PayNow and India's UPI.

How will UPI work in France and charges levied ?

Indian tourists to Europe won't have to make all of their purchases with credit or debit cards anymore. Once everything is up and running, they can use their UPI app to pay in rupees using local QR codes or UPI IDs in France.

Depending on the card features, markup fees for overseas payments made with credit or debit cards typically range from 0.99 percent to 3.5 percent of the payment amount.

Transactions made within India using UPI are currently free of charge.

The RBI and the Indian Banks' Association created the domestic NPCI as a joint effort, and it serves as an umbrella body for enabling retail payments and settlement through the RuPay gateway in India.
