UPI Payments- How to Transfer Money Without Using the Internet?

UPI payments require an active internet connection; however, there are some locations where the internet connection is extremely slow. It is virtually impossible to conduct transactions using UPI or any of the UPI apps that support it in such cases. NPCI launched *99#, a USSD-based mobile banking service, in November 2012. This *99# service was made available to all mobile phone users in India, including those who did not own a smartphone. You can use the *99# service and use all UPI facilities as long as you are a part of the UPI ecosystem and the phone you are using for this has the registered phone number linked to your UPI account. Here is a step by step guide on how to make UPI payments without an internet connection.

Features of *99# Service

  • Uses USSD as the access channel, which is compatible with all GSM handsets (smartphone or otherwise), allowing it to reach the last mile user.
  • Supports menu-based applications that are simple to use for users.
  • Because it does not require data connectivity (it operates on a signalling channel), it is highly available. service
  • Availability around the clock (works even on holidays)
  • Accessible via the common code *99# on specific GSM Operators and mobile handsets.
  • Another way to use the BHIM app and a key driver of financial inclusion
