Denis O'Brien's career is marked by a series of remarkable accomplishments. He began his professional journey at a small investment bank, Trinity Bank, before becoming a personal assistant to Tony Ryan, the owner of an aircraft leasing company. This experience laid the foundation for his future success in the business world. O'Brien's entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish Communicorp in 1989, which operates independent radio stations in Ireland and expanded into Eastern European countries. His acquisition of eight radio stations in the United Kingdom in 2014 and the subsequent formation of Communicorp UK in 2017 further solidified his position in the media industry.

O'Brien's ventures in the telecommunications sector are equally noteworthy. He formed Esat Telecom in 1991 to challenge the state-owned Telecom Eireann, revolutionizing the Irish telecommunications landscape. His partnership with Telenor resulted in the creation of Esat Digifone, which secured Ireland's second GSM mobile license. The company's success led to an initial public offering in 1997, listing on the Irish Stock Exchange, London Stock Exchange, and NASDAQ.

O'Brien's sale of Esat Telecom to BT in 2000 for a substantial sum of €250 million marked a significant milestone in his career.

O'Brien's entrepreneurial endeavors extended to the aviation industry with the co-founding of Aergo Capital in 1999. Holding an 80% stake in the company, he oversaw the trading of over 150 aircraft with a gross value exceeding €791 million until 2014. His strategic decision to sell Aergo Capital to CarVal, a US investment firm, in October 2014 demonstrated his ability to make astute business decisions.

O'Brien's involvement in Independent News & Media (INM) added another dimension to his diverse portfolio. He gradually acquired shares of INM, eventually owning a 29.9% stake. However, clashes with the company's board and former owner Tony O'Reilly led to the sale of his shares to Mediahuis, a Belgian media group, in April 2019. Despite this divestment, O'Brien's influence in the media industry remains significant, with allegations of editorial interference at INM.

O'Brien's entrepreneurial spirit knows no bounds. He founded Digicel in 2001, a telecommunications company that operates in the Caribbean, Central America, and Asia Pacific. His vision led to the establishment of a wireless network in Jamaica and expansion into the South Pacific in the same year. Digicel's growth trajectory has been remarkable, with operations spanning 25 countries as of 2022. O'Brien's commitment to social responsibility is evident through the establishment of the Digicel Foundation, which supports community services, builds schools and health centers, and assists in recovery efforts. His contributions have been recognized with prestigious honors, including the National Order of Honour and Merit from Haiti's President Michel Martelly in 2012 and honorary membership of the Order of Jamaica in 2015. Despite facing financial challenges, Digicel successfully underwent a debt restructuring agreement in May 2020 and sold its Pacific operations to Telstra Corp, an Australian telecommunications company, for US$1.85 billion in October 2021.

O'Brien's business acumen extends beyond the telecommunications and media sectors.

He acquired Siteserv, a utilities support company, from IBRC in 2012 and renamed it Actavo. His expansion strategy included the purchase of Atlantic Engineering Services in 2016, bringing Actavo into the United States market. O'Brien's acquisition of €300 million in debt owed by Topaz Energy to the Irish Bank Resolution Corporation in December 2013 further diversified his portfolio. Topaz's parent company subsequently announced the purchase of all of Esso's Irish operations in December 2014, solidifying its position in the energy sector. In December 2015, Topaz was sold to Alimentation Couche-Tard, a Canadian convenience store company.
