German Borisovich Khan was born in Kyiv, Ukraine on October 24, 1961 to Ukrainian Jewish parents from Lviv. His father was a metallurgy professor, and Khan developed a passion for sports, specifically boxing, at a young age. After meeting businessman Mikhail Fridman, Khan headed Alfa Eco, a wholesale trade business within Alfa Group Consortium. The company initially bought and sold various products, including carpets. Khan held managerial positions as the company expanded, including head of wholesale trade and export departments. Alfa Group Consortium includes Alfa Capital Management, Rosvodokanal Group, AlfaStrakhovanie Group, and A1 Group. Alfa Group also holds interests in Vimpelcom and X5 Group. TNK-BP became Russia's third largest oil company and a top ten private oil producer globally. Conflicts arose between BP executives and Alfa Access Renova (AAR) over TNK-BP's internationalization strategy. Khan resisted BP's push to do business with Rosneft, contrary to their shareholder agreement. His net worth was estimated at $9.6 billion in 2011, ranking him 92nd on the Forbes billionaires list and 13th wealthiest in Russia. Khan was appointed executive director of TNK-BP Ltd. in January 2011.
TNK-BP was sold to Rosneft for $56 billion in 2012, with Khan officially leaving TNK-BP in March 2013. He earned around $3.3 billion from the deal. Khan joined Mikhail Fridman in establishing LetterOne (L1) in Luxembourg to invest proceeds from the TNK-BP sale. L1 Energy was founded in 2013 with prominent figures joining the advisory board. However, they faced challenges due to the 2014 downturn in the oil industry and falling ruble value, losing an estimated $2.5 billion. Alfa Group's assets equaled around $40 billion by March 2015. Lord Browne was appointed chairman of L1 Energy in March 2015, and the company officially launched in May 2015.
