More Than Just Packaging: Why Jewellers Use Pink Paper To Wrap Gold Jewellery?

If you have ever purchased gold jewellery, you may have noticed jewellers carefully wrapping the ornaments in pink paper before placing them inside a box or bag. Although modern jewellery showrooms now use luxurious velvet boxes and designer packaging, many small and traditional jewellery shops still continue this long-followed practice. But have you ever wondered why jewellers specifically use pink paper instead of any other colour?

Jewellers

The reason is a mix of tradition, belief, and practicality. In many cultures, pink is considered a symbol of happiness, prosperity, and positive energy. Since gold is associated with wealth and good fortune, wrapping it in pink paper is believed to protect it from negative energy during exchange or storage. In some regions, people even believe that using black or white paper for valuables like gold may bring bad luck or negative vibes.

Apart from these traditional beliefs, there is also a practical reason behind the use of pink paper. Gold jewellery, especially ornaments mixed with other metals or alloys, can gradually lose some of its shine when exposed to air, moisture, and pollutants. The special pink paper used by jewellers helps reduce this exposure and protects the jewellery from tarnishing.

"The pink paper you often see with gold jewellery isn't random. It's been used for decades because it's simple, soft enough to prevent minor scratches, and the colour enhances the warmth and richness of gold at first glance," Aditi Daga, co-founder of Angara, told The Indian Express.

The pink paper is usually acid-free and chemically treated to make it safe for storing precious metals. It acts as a protective barrier against humidity, dust, and environmental pollutants. Ordinary paper may contain acidic substances or chemicals that can damage jewellery over time, but pink jewellery paper is specifically designed to prevent such harm. That is why jewellery stored in this paper often remains shiny and well-preserved even after many years.

The pink colour also enhances the appearance of gold. The soft pink background creates a contrast that makes gold jewellery look brighter, richer, and more attractive to the eye. The warm reflection from the pink shade naturally highlights the shine and beauty of the metal.

"For aesthetic reasons, gold's yellow tone appears richer and more vivid due to the attractive contrast created by pink," Krishan Kumar Dal, Department Lead - Jewellery Design, Pearl Academy, Jaipur, explained to The Indian Express. "This minor optical trick increases the jewellery's appeal at the time of purchase."

"Gold appears brighter, more glossy, and aesthetically pleasing due to the warm contrast created by the gentle pink tone," Dal added. "The gold appears richer and more sophisticated rather than harsh or overly reflective since both hues are within a warm palette."

So, the next time a jeweller wraps your gold jewellery in pink paper, remember that it is not just a packaging tradition, it is a practice rooted in culture, protection, and presentation.
