Douglas had two younger sisters: Elisabeth Douglas (married Prince Max, Duke in Bavaria) and Rosita Douglas (third wife of the 11th Duke of Marlborough). His patriline is Scottish, descended from the youngest son of James Douglas, 1st Lord Dalkeith. His maternal great-grandfather was Philipp, Prince of Eulenburg, a friend of Wilhelm II.
