The Navi Mumbai International Airport is emerging as a leading sustainable aviation hub in India, featuring advanced technology and a commitment to environmental initiatives.
The Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) — India’s next major aviation hub — is steadily taking shape as one of the most advanced and sustainable airports in the world. The project is being executed by Navi Mumbai International Airport Limited (NMIAL), a special purpose vehicle formed under a Public-Private Partnership between Mumbai International Airport Ltd. (a subsidiary of Adani Airports Holdings Ltd.) and CIDCO (City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Ltd.), with shareholding of 74% and 26% respectively.

Located in Ulwe, Navi Mumbai, just 37 kilometres from South Mumbai, NMIA is designed to ease air traffic congestion in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and enhance India’s global connectivity. Spread across 1,160 hectares (around 2,866 acres), the airport will feature two Code-F compliant runways, enabling simultaneous flight operations and positioning NMIA among India’s largest aviation projects.
The initial phase will cater to 20 million passengers annually, while the final phase is expected to handle up to 90 million passengers per year, with four terminals planned to accommodate both domestic and international operations seamlessly.
NMIA’s architecture draws inspiration from the Lotus, India’s national flower — a symbol of purity and resilience. The terminal features 12 sculptural feature columns resembling unfurling petals and 17 mega columns that support the expansive lotus-shaped roof canopy. Inside, passengers will find immersive digital art installations, interactive tunnels narrating stories of Maharashtra and India, and an innovative Digital Art Programme that will showcase local culture through both physical and virtual exhibits.
Technology-Driven Passenger Experience
NMIA is envisioned as a fully connected 5G smart airport, leveraging data-driven insights to enhance efficiency, reduce turnaround times, and ensure a seamless, contactless travel experience. Key features include:
- Integration with Digi Yatra for zero manual ID and boarding-pass checks
- Automated baggage handling and real-time IoT tracking systems
- Wi-Fi enabled terminals with advanced cybersecurity
- aviio, an in-house app for airport stakeholders to coordinate operations
Cargo and Logistics Excellence
In its first phase, the cargo terminal will handle 0.5 million metric tonnes annually, scaling up to 3.2 million metric tonnes in later stages. With fully automated handling systems, 100% shipment tracking, and GDP-compliant temperature-controlled zones for pharmaceuticals and perishables, NMIA aims to become a preferred logistics hub for industries across Western India. Strategically situated near Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) and major industrial zones such as Taloja MIDC, the airport will offer unmatched multimodal connectivity for cargo movement.
Hospitality, Retail, and F&B Experiences
The airport’s retail and food offerings will celebrate both Mumbai’s flavour and global trends — from Bombay Bond food concepts and artisanal teas to chef-curated fine dining and breweries. Over 110 outlets will be available, including duty-free stores and digital convenience services integrated through the Adani OneApp. Passenger comfort remains a core focus, with CIP lounges accommodating up to 500 guests, an 80-room transit/day hotel, meet-and-greet services, and even kids’ play zones.
Commitment to Sustainability
