It is one of India's oldest and most respected Non-Banking Financial Company. The Company was jointly promoted by Sundaram Finance Ltd and Stewart Newton Holdings (Mauritius) Ltd in 1996.

Sundaram Financial Limited set up a mutual fund under the name of Sundaram Mutual Fund in compliance with a trust deed dated 24th August 19966 between Sundaram Finance Limited and the Sundaram Mutual Fund Board of trustees. Under the Indian Trust Acts, 1882 the fund wad formed as a trust. Sundaram Mutual Fund has been registered with the Securities and Exchange Board of India, an independent regulatory body, established by law, for oversight of capital markets and investor protection. The SEBI issued registration number is MF/034/97/2 and is registered on the date 3rd January 1997. The trust deed dated August 24 1996, and the deed of amendment dated March 22 2004, have been registered under the Indian Registration Act, 1908 with the Sub-Registrar, Chennai-India (Serial Number 356 of 1996 and Serial Number 108 of 2004, respectively).

Sundaram Finance Limited is the sponsor of the Sundaram Mutual Fund. Sundaram Finance owns the fulls shareholding of Sundaram Asset Management Company Limited and Sundaram Trustee Company Limited. The sponsor is the Trustee and has irrevocably paid the amount of Rs 1 lakh as the fund of the trust.

In compliance with the trust deed of 24 August 1996 as modified from time to time, it shall be held and controlled by the Trust. Sundaram Finance Limited is one of the largest non-banking finance firm in India with a track record of 65 years.
